Overlooked No More: How One Woman Shook Up the Abolitionist Movement:

“We should do more and talk less.” With that statement Mary Ann Shadd Cary questioned the anti-slavery establishment and helped define a new role for black women. But her work didn’t end there.

Mary Ann Shadd Cary was the first black woman in North America to edit and publish a newspaper, one of the first black female lawyers in the United States and an advocate for granting women the right to vote.
