Viola Desmond to be first Canadian woman on $10 bill

Civil rights activist Viola Desmond will be the first Canadian woman to appear on the country’s $10 bill.

Black activist Viola Desmond was jailed for defiantly sitting in the “whites only” section of a Nova Scotia film house – nine years before Rosa Parks’ similar act of defiance on a bus – and will replace Canada’s first Prime Minister as the face on their $10 bill.
